First "Ride For Cheer" for 2002The BWAH 2002 season was launched with a "Ride For Cheer" dedicated to a 7 year old boy, Davis from Saco. The original ride date of May 12th was postponed because of rain, and Davis' patience was tested, as his special ride had to be put off a week. The 19th proved to be a clear day, bringing about a nice turnout of spirited "Bikers With A Heart". In general, the first ride of the year has a special sweetness, as bikers have recently come out of a long period of Maine "hibernation". It was good to see all the "regulars", as well as newcomers, who are always heartily welcomed. ![]() ![]() New Aspects of the "Ride For Cheer"Although the past six years have proven the success of the general formula used to execute the "Ride For Cheer" experience, it's always nice to note new changes and additions. For example, this was the "inaugural ride" for Almodarr the Magician, who dazzled Davis with his magic and showmanship. Undoubtedly, he was a hit with Davis and for all that watched. Thank you, Almodarr, and we hope to see you for many more rides to come! Also, Lieutenant Gary Fecteau of the York County Sheriff's Department was sporting his new unmarked police cruiser. Although new and fancy, the white unmarked Crown Victoria with extra antennas was as inconspicuous as a motorcycle at a tea social. Also, we tried out a CB communications arrangement between a couple of "road captains" and me. (Thanks, Steve and Dusty!) The system worked flawlessly, ensuring a greater level of safety and peace of mind. In the future, we envision using CB communications on a regular basis for the "Rides For Cheer", enhancing coordination and further heightening safety during the actual rides. ![]() ![]() Davis Davis was stricken with Muscular Dystrophy, a disease of progressive muscle weakness. Despite his tendency towards muscle fatigue, he faired pretty well on his special day, being able to mount Steve's Gold Wing for the exciting "parade ride" by the waterway. (Davis is no stranger to motorcycles, with a mother and grandfather who ride.) Earlier, Davis was enamored with Almodarr's special magic. His eyes also widened as Davis was presented with the special "Certificate of Proclamation" by Raymond, a welcomed newcomer to BWAH. Afterwards, Davis took the bullhorn microphone and let out a resounding "THANK YOU!" to the bikers. It was very moving. The general mission of BWAH is to leave Davis, (and each of the kids), with an uplifting, positive and unforgettable experience. On May 12th, it was "mission accomplished!" ![]() ![]() To all who participated, ride safe, and… THINK OF THE KIDS! See you next month!
