A newsletter for "BIKERS WITH A HEART"

Well, the new season started off on a wet note, with a rain cancellation in May, (like last year). The "winter blahs" are over and we are all ready to move on to the sunny days that lie ahead. The BWAH family is back for the 11th year and getting larger each year with many new faces and of course the old timers were there to bring in the cheer. We all wish we could do so much more for these children. Even though the time in the spotlight may be overwhelming to some of our children initially, apprehensions are usually quickly replaced with joy, as the the spirit of compassion and care are evident.

This goes for our first “Ride of Cheer” of the season, in which Shaylee Elizabeth Marie Hauer, age 3, of Biddeford, had so many riders come to visit her and make her feel special. 25 bikes showed for this first run and the sun really helped getting all of us together to go share in such a great cause. (We've had so much rain for the many weeks prior to the ride.)

Shaylee and her mom Vanessa enjoyed the "parade ride" along with several other family members. In speaking with David (step dad), he reports that Shaylee is very strong, loves the outdoors, rides her bicycle and is generally very happy. Shaylee was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) when she was just 1˝ years of age and continues to be checked for disease activity on a monthly basis with blood tests. At this time Shaylee is in remission, with the next five years being critical in determining her prognosis. David says that Shaylee understands that she is ill and why she has to go to the hospital, and she also knows that it may help her to stay healthy.

Shaylee, was a little shy at first then her smile radiated like the sunhine of the day. Shaylee was presented the grab-bag by Tyler (newcomer) and Dan Haskell presented the "Certificate of Proclamation."

As the “Ride of Cheer” was concluding, she showed off her skills on her bike and... boy oh’ boy, we all think she'll soon be ready for her own motorcycle someday!

Think of the kids!
